DIY Hand Sanitizer

by MHSjennie on February 3, 2014

I have been on a mission for years to cut back the chemicals I use in our food and products. We are so busy with LIFE that hand sanitizers have become our way to keep our hands clean! I hate to admit this, but I would rather use the hand sanitizer on the kids hands after going to the potty while we are out than having to hold them up to wash their hands. They love to play in the soap and water and I doubt they are really getting their hands clean in the process. Hand Sanitizer is quick and easy, but some can contain some nasty chemicals! Grayson puts everything in his mouth, especially his little fingers so the last thing I want is a chemical laden sanitizer on his hands!  I have used the Clean Well brand in the past, but started making my own recently using Essential oils! It is super easy and CHEAP which I love :)

DIY Hand Sanitizer

The Ultimate Hand Sanitizer

  • OnGuard Essential Oil (this is the main ingredient for your hand sanitizer because it is a natural disinfectant!!)
  • Aloe Vera Gel (this helps moisturize the skin)
  • Witch Hazel (this soothes skin irritations and has an added anti-bacterial property)
  • Glass spray bottle (I wouldn’t recommend using a plastic bottle because the oils can absorb the plastic and contaminate the spray)

Fill your bottle about 90% up with the Aloe Vera (make sure you get a gel that doesn’t have added fillers and coloring added to it). Add 10-15 drops of OnGuard and then top off the bottle with Witch Hazel. Witch Hazel has a potent smell and can be omitted since the OnGuard is a strong antibacterial.

Lazy Mama’s Sanitizer (this is my fav!)

  • Water
  • 15 drops of OnGuard

Add your OnGuard to your glass bottle and fill the rest up with water. Shake and spray! This is as cheap and easy as you can get. It is a little watery when it goes on the skin, but I don’t mind it at all since it dries so quickly and I can make a DIY sanitizer for my fam in seconds! This spray in particular is super versatile too! You can use it as a sanitizer, as a disinfectant spray for your counter tops, doorknobs and toys, as a throat spray when you are coming down with a sore throat, or in your diffuser to help kill germs when others in your house are sick! LOVE me some OnGuard!!!

I would love to hear about ways you use your Essential Oils! I have been amazed at how they are changing my life and would love for you to share how they have changed yours!  Not ALL ESSENTIAL OILS are created equal. Oils can say 100% pure therapeutic grade and not be completely pure. I highly recommend to do your own research! doTERRA Oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade and are tested on 6 different levels for their purity. If you have any questions or need help locating the right oil for your own particular health concerns, please send me an email and be sure to check out my website for all things doTERRA! I am not a doctor and all opinions are my own.

This is a great idea! I love my hand sanitizer. I admit I am a germ-a-phobe. I have little kids too and I am always looking for more safe and natrual alternatives. We will have to give this a try. Stopping by from SITs. Have a great evening.

Thanks for the tip. I try to avoid chemicals of all kinds wherever possible, and hands are especially important as they are the part that gets washed most frequently. In addition we are touching our babies a lot, so having toxin free hands is super important.
