Utilize Your Local Public Library

by Jennie on January 6, 2011

I am always talking about how cheap thrifty I am and I always love finding things to do for us that are FREE! My friends laugh at me when they have something for us to do that may cost $6 to get in and I hesitate! What can I say…. mama is on a budget and did I mention, very tight with money :) Now I do splurge for sure, but it is so hard for me to pay for us to do “family stuff” when there is so much you can do for free! We are always trying to share with you on our posts, through facebook and our family fun page free or inexpensive family fun events. A lot of what we find is local, but we would love for those of you who live elsewhere to please feel free to email us great events in your area so we can share with others. Also, please feel free to post them on our facebook page :)

We have talked a lot about utilizing your local public library. Yesterday, I went for the FREE story time for the first time. It was GREAT! They read books, sang songs and set out toys for the kids to play with afterwards. I was really impressed and couldn’t believe I hadn’t gone sooner. I started looking at all of the local libraries around this area and they offer everything from story time (some with doggies!) to music classes to free tutoring for school aged children. I really want to encourage all of you to research the local public libraries near you because they have some GREAT resources!! Of course, the library is great for finding your fav books, but don’t forget you can also find DVD’s and CD’s there also. Check out our post on BOOKS to find a comprehensive list of great books for the kiddos voted on by other MAMAS!!! In case you missed it, check out our post on the We Can Read Books which are great starter books for beginning readers!

Have you utilized your local library for family fun? What are your favorite things to do? Are there any hidden treasures in your town that hosts family fun events that you just couldn’t live without?

Also, some Libraries even have video games that you can check out too!! :) I didn't know that. The one in Wyoming has a great TV show collection on DVD. I am so tempted to cancel cable and just get movies and TV series on DVD from the library for us and the kids… still trying to talk Scott into it :)
