Healthy Living: Deodorants!

by MHSjennie on October 12, 2010

I’ve always been told that it is unhealthy to use the anti-perspirants on the market because they use aluminum to create a temporary block of your ducts. However, the thought of giving up my regular deodorant was something I just couldn’t bare! I didn’t think anything else would work and never thought twice about reaching for my trusty Lady Speed Stick – Antiperspirant and Deodorant. As I’ve gotten older (since I’ve had Luke) our house has taken on a more checmical free environment and we look at the ingredients on EVERYTHING now! We do try to be careful about what we’re eating, breathing and surrounding ourselves with at home. It’s not an easy journey and we can’t do everything so once again, we pick things that we feel particularly strong about and start there…baby steps!

Earlier this year, my husband found out that he had a build up of aluminum in his system that was causing a few problems for him. We’ve learned first hand what the impacts have been as a result and we were told the two best ways to prevent aluminum build up again would be to ensure our deodorant and toothpaste don’t use the compounds such as: aluminum chloride, aluminum chlorohydrate and aluminum zirconium. As you know, this pretty much eliminates all of the anti-perspirants on the market. Apparently, one of the worst things you can do is get out of the hot shower with your pores wide open and put that aluminum compound straight into your body.  It is also worth mentioning that there are plenty of studies that claim to have other healthy risks attached to prolonged use of the ingredients used in anti-perspirants, just google it and decide for yourself!

Needless to say, I immediately threw my current deodorant in the trash can and started my search for a more “natural” deodorant that would work. I tried the Melaleuca natural deodorant – didn’t work for me. I tried one other natural deodorant before Jennie mentioned that men’s deodorant works great! I have been using an Old Spice variety that has been working great for me (the “manly” scent took some getting used to!). I know many others who would like to switch their deodorants but are afraid (like I was for years!) nothing will work for them. We’re here to help and give you a list of six natural deodorants that “work”!

We haven’t tried all of these but we hope this will help give you a few ideas and a place to start if you’re looking to switch your deodorant. Thanks to Your Green Helper for the great info:
