How to Recover a Chair Cushion

by MHSjennie on July 29, 2014

I moved out when I was 18 and I still have the same small dining room set! I know right?! It has always just worked with the space in the different places I have lived so I really haven’t had a need to get something new, but with my boys always spilling drinks and food on the chair cushions it was either time to buy new or repurpose what we had. Being the cheap girl that I am I figured I would repurpose the cushions since it is SO easy and cheap to do!

Step 1

Buy your new fabric. I chose a vinyl fabric which is actually wipeable! If I went with another type, I would have run into the same problem with the stains. I found some at Hobby Lobby in their 50% off bin. I was able to get all the fabric I needed for $20! Not bad :) You will want to measure your cushions and then add about 2-4 inches all the way around (depending on how big the side of your cushions are) so you have plenty to pull under the seat to staple.

Step 2

Remove your cushions from your chair frame.

I am ashamed to have to show these to you, but here was my nasty chair fabric!! YUCK!

 Step 3

You can either cover directly over the existing fabric or take off the fabric and use an old t-shirt as your base fabric. If you use the t-shirt, you would just stretch it over the cushion and staple it to the bottom before attaching the new fabric. I covered directly over my existing fabric and had no problem. I feel like it added a little extra cushion too.

You will measure and cut your fabric (adding the extra 2-4 inches) and then just lay over your seat. Flip the cushion over so you can see the bottom. You will then pull the fabric as tight as you can and staple all the way around! My hubby and I both did this together so one could hold and the other staple. It is literally as easy as that!

I was so pleased with the finished project and it took us about 1.5 hours from start to finish to do all 4 chairs. Now I have these adorable chairs that look like new and they are totally wipeable so NO MORE STAINS!!! Woohoo! I am not really crafty, but this was so simple anyone can do it!
