It Doesn’t Matter if Mama is Sick….

sick and nursing

I may be sick, but the kid still has to eat!

Yes, that’s right! Mama may have a double ear ache, sore jaws, a throat that feels like razor blades when I swallow, headache, weak all over, fever… all of which = STREP THROAT…..BUT the kid still has to eat! We may be sick and yet we still don’t truly get to rest! Luckily, the hubs has been holding down the fort for the last two days so I only have to get close to Grayson when I nurse- thus the mask! Don’t I look happy??! Seriously, I don’t think I have felt this bad since I was a teenager. I ended up going to the doc yesterday and getting some antibiotics so after just a few hours of taking them (maybe 5-6 hours) I was feel remarkably better.. still totally yucky, but the pain is actually manageable now. Today, I still have all the same symptoms (minus the fever), but all much less painful. Now the kids both have runny noses and coughs. FUN FUN!!! SO what have I learned from all this??

  • Moms never get sick days
  • Yes, you can have strep throat, a fever and take antibiotics and all are safe when nursing.
  • Keep masks on hand for situations like these!
  • Hand sanitizer is nothing short of a miracle. If I had to wash my hands every time I touched something germy, my hands would also be in misery, along with the rest of my body. DIY: water and a few drops of OnGuard in a glass spray bottle. This also works as a great throat antiseptic spray!
  • Puffs plus with lotion is the only kleenex you will ever need
  • Hot showers are my friend
  • Few other things we tried: Slippery Elm Bark tea (found at whole foods)- VERY good flavor and felt good on my throat. Airborne. The hubs has been taking this every day around all of us sickys and has stayed well! My next thing I want to try is elderberry syrup.

Hope you are all staying well. What are your favorite things when you are under the weather??

Hope you feel better soon! That sounds awful, but you will have to frame that picture =)

I do have a funny related story (well, not so funny at the time). I had mastitis when Cole was about 1 month old. I was beyond miserable. J had started a new job the week before Cole was born, so he wasn't ready to take time off. No family nearby, so no help. A friend (w/o kids) texted me wanting help putting together a new piece of furniture or something. I told her I was sick, and she asked where the baby was. I had to explain that sick or not, I don't get to call in to the baby. Ok, after all that, want to guess what she did? No, she didn't offer to help. She called J and asked him to help her after work! And of course he helped her. I could have killed them both.
