Beech Acres: The Frazzled Family

by Jennie on July 22, 2011

We talk a lot about Beech Acres and the amazing parenting conferences and workshops that we go to hosted by them. We HEART Beech Acres!! This month was about The Frazzled Family and how stress can have such an impact on the individual person and the family as a whole. H-E-L-L-O… I know we can all relate to this one!!

One thing I really loved that was said is that ‘you can only control how you are going to react in a situation. How you choose to respond can change the outcome’. I can totally vouch for this. These last few weeks I have been feeling exhausted (you know how you feel at the end of your pregnancy… you can’t get comfy which means no sleep for you!), uncomfortable and on edge. I am not near as patient as I feel I normally am. I can see it effect Cody with the way he listens and reacts to me. I have noticed it looking back on encounters with Steve and know that my reactions and words can make the discussion a positive or negative tone. It really is something to ponder right?!

Another thing that was discussed was Ways To Manage Stress:

  1. Keep A Diary or Journal: this can help to see if you have a pattern or times of days when stress occurs and you can see your stress in greater detail
  2. Relaxing Breaths
  3. Yoga Positions
  4. Identify peaceful places, people, possessions and possibilities
  5. Set clear boundaries
  6. Guided Imagery
  7. Rest
  8. Treat yourself to something special (hello mall… here I come hehehe!)
Lastly, a GREAT worksheet we were given and able to take was the Wheel Of Life Worksheet. The website talks about how to use the Wheel, but the basic lesson is that we all have roles and tasks and we should try and balance all of those as much as possible. The more balanced we can make our life and all the things in it, the less stressed and happier we will be!! My challenge to you is to print the worksheet and see how you do.. find the areas that are out of balance and start working on getting those things back on track!!
I would LOVE to hear about how your Wheel of Life turns out (the good and the bad!) and ways you have found to manage stress!! Doing these things do take a little time, but I think it is well worth it in the end. We deserve it and so do our families!!
If you are interested in attending the next parenting workshop you can sign up on their website. It will be August 10th at 7pm and they will be discussing “Raising Responsible Kids”. The cost is only $15!!
