It’s all about the Eggs

by Jennie on February 1, 2011

I have some very exciting news…..!!

My friend, mama Jeanne, has chickens at her house so that she can feed her family with their very own eggs. A few months ago someone challenged that because there was a law that was against having chickens at your residence in the city of Norwood. After several visits to the city hall meetings (where she and her many supporters spoke out on why having chickens was no different, and in some cases safer, than having a dog or cat as a pet) the law was passed that Norwood residents can now have chickens!!!! I was present at two of those meetings and I just want to say how proud I am of Jeanne and all of those who came out to support the cause. I think it is so wonderful that families are choosing to have chickens so that they can have their own healthy eggs while teaching their children where eggs really come from. I learned so many things about keeping chickens from Jeanne that (once we sell our house) I want to get my own!! One interesting fact she told me was that you know you have a good, healthy, rich egg if the yolk is a deep yellow/orange color. The deeper the color, the healthier more nutrient rich diet the chickens were fed. Take a look at the yolks the next time you crack open an egg and see how they measure up!

If keeping chickens at home is not for you I have included a site, Cornucopia Institute, that rates hundreds of egg brands. Check and see how your fav brand ranks!  We also talked awhile ago about recalled eggs and egg safety which I suggest taking a look at.  We also posted a Cornucopia rating on milk as well if you would like to check  that out.

Hopefully this will give you some insight on how we as consumers can make a more conscious decision on things we buy and if that doesn’t satisfy us it is good to know we have the freedom of growing or housing our own food right in our own backyards!!

Great post Jennie!

•Eggs from pastured birds are superior to those from hens raised indoors, whose yolks are literally pale imitations of those from hens fed grass and plants. Our chicken’s yolks are a rich yellow/orange from the beta-carotene in plants that they eat from our yard waste and our table scraps.

I'll add that if anyone wants to read about Real Food – what to eat and why and Real Food for Mother and Baby….check out Nina Planck's books. She is and her information is – amazing! :) ~Jeanne :)

That is great! Chickens are also quieter than dogs too. We are also a chicken farming family and we love it!
