Spike Magic Spices

by Jennie on December 21, 2010

Until recently, we had no idea what kind of “junk ingredients” are in the store bought ready made spice packets! (It reads something like a science experiment!) We have both had friends who have told us about all the additives (MSG, Silica, the list goes on…) and other nasties that are in those spice packets and we had NO idea! After that, Kim made her own taco seasoning and it turned out fabulous! The whole family loved the taste and boy could they tell a difference in the taste!

Recently, we have had the pleasure of trying the Spike Magic Spice line (which we had never heard of). They have SO many different spices to choose from including 5 Herbs, Lemon Pepper, Vegetized All Purpose, All Purpose Hot n Spicy, Low Sodium Vegit, Garlic, All Purpose Salt Free, Tenderizer, All Purpose Original & Onion.  The company states they are made are made without preservatives or additives, are gluten free and have zero calories per serving, and no added MSG. However, there are reports about there being hydrolyzed vegetable protein in the spices, which from the research we’ve done is a form of MSG. We have emailed our contact at Spike to ask further questions about this ingredient and when we know more we’ll be sure to update you!

One of the things that we were so impressed by was the nutrition added to the spices . Most of the spices contained nutritional yeast (aka brewers yeast), kelp, and even fenugreek. We love that you are getting some nutritional extras while using the spices! The tenderizer and all purpose original added great flavor to our steak the other night! This seems like a good alternative to have in the cupboard for a little variety if you love the idea of making your own spices but don’t always have the time. We are so excited to try out all the spice flavors and there’s no doubt this makes us get excited about cooking and trying new things!

We were surprised we hadn’t heard of Spike Magic before. This seems like a great alternative to other brands and seems to be more natural. Has anyone tried Spike spices before? What do you think???! Do you have any favorite natural brands or any DIY recipes you would like to share?!

If you want to purchase some of your own you can get them through our astore (located under food/spices)! Don’t forget to check out our Recipes page for yummy, healthy, family friendly recipes :) If you have recipes of your own you would like to share, please send them to us and we will post it!

We did hear from the Representatives at Spike and they assured us that there is no added MSG, but there is a very low level of what is considered "natural" MSG, the same is found in tomatoes and cheese.
